Sunday 7th July 2024 - London

Arrive in London. Take some time to relax and unwind after your travels at the California Hotel, located just across from the iconic St. Pancras train station with access to airports, underground network (the “Tube”) and buses. Like you, this hotel is unique, from floating beds to a sun-soaked terrace.

Over the coming days, you will benefit from a natural approach to learning, with opportunities for discussion and study intertwined with sightseeing experiences.

Monday 8th July 2024 - Deal, Kent

Following a tasty breakfast, it’s time to leave London and board the train to Dover. From Dover you will hike along the stunning cliff-top coastal path to the town of Deal, visiting highlights such as Dover Castle, Blériot Memorial, South Foreland Lighthouse, and Walmer Castle & Gardens.

Arriving into Deal on foot, your home for the coming nights is a family-owned hotel & restaurant in the town of Deal. The hotel has beautiful panoramic sea views overlooking Deals’ pier and beach. The Dunkerley family roots are firmly embedded in Deal, Kent’s rich maritime history. Having been collected from you in Dover, your luggage will be waiting here when you finish your walk.

Tuesday 9th July 2024 - Deal, Kent

The next leg of your trip will take you by train to Margate to complete another section of the England Coast Path. Taking in the best of the Isle of Thanet, this peninsular walk from the seaside town of Margate to the bustling town of Ramsgate boasts spectacular views across no less than nine bays. With stunning cliffs interspersed with wild flowers, it is truly one of the most stunning walks in Kent.

On your return to Deal by train we have the option to stop at Sandwich, one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval towns in the UK; it’s unspoilt streets are said to contain more half-timbered houses than any other street in England.

Wednesday 10th July 2024 - London

Learning Material

Balancing Empathy and Self Compassion in Medical Practice

Clinician empathy is linked to improved patient outcomes, reduced patient pain, and staff retention. Self-compassion is crucial for positive, healthy relationships both with patients and employees in the office. Although physicians are trained to be self-sacrificing, they will avoid burnout and increase satisfaction in their work if they can develop self-compassion.

Building Emotional Intelligence into Family Practice in Medical Practice

As a medical professional, you cannot overestimate the importance of your Emotional Intelligence (EI). EI comprises self and social awareness along with self and social management. Data shows that 95% of people think they are self aware, but those same studies show us that only 15% actually are. EI is essential for a physician to be able to communicate with patients who may have complexities in their ability to express themselves. EI is essential for physicians to work well with colleagues on a team.

Navigating Social Identities and Bias in Medical Practice

Social identity is one of the aspects of your “self-concept” — how you see yourself as a person. Social identities include things like generation, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, (dis)ability, political affiliation, relationship status, profession, and socioeconomic status. Along with personal identity (e.g., personal attributes you use to describe yourself, like being tall or conscientious), social identity influences our values, the stories we tell about ourselves and others, and things that motivate us toward action

Building Resilience for Effective Leadership & Teamwork

Resilience is key for handling job stress and managing relationships at work. Resilience is associated with increased job satisfaction, happiness at work, decreased turnover and increased employee engagement. In the midst of record burnout among physicians, increasing resilience is one essential solution to survive a broken system.
