Friday

Whether you’re heading from the South, North or Midlands, with our recommendations you’re sure to enjoy the drive through Wales. Check in to your comfortable hotel in the gateway to Snowdonia, Betws Y Coed.

Your short North Wales driving holiday is designed to leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind, escaping to the fresh clean air and immersive culture of North Wales.

Explore your new home for the weekend and check out our recommendations for where to eat this evening.

Saturday

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before heading off on a scenic drive through Snowdonia national park to the island of Anglesey. Pass through epic mountain scenery and soak up the spectacular views along the Menai Strait.

On arrival on Anglesey, make sure you’re wrapped up warm. You’ll be heading out on a high speed powerboat to explore the stunning coastline of the island, discovering the local inhabitants of Puffin island and spotting for seals and porpoises along the way. Your skipper is a mine of local information, so listen out for stories of times gone by as well as his own more recent adventures along the Menai Strait.

Back on dry land, head to the mainland and enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains as you wind through the north west corner of Snowdonia national park. Portmeirion Village was made famous through 60s cult TV show The Prisoner and continues to draw visitors from around the world, through its quirky Italianate architecture and exquisite location on the Dwyryd Estuary. A short guided tour around the village will bring to life the vision of Clough Williams-Ellis, the architect behind this creative and ambitious project. With a whole village to explore, 70 acres of sub-tropical forest and miles of coastal path, there is truly something for everyone to discover in this mind-bending corner of North Wales.

We’ll provide recommendations for independent eateries where you can enjoy lunch along the way. Or save yourself for a delicious meal at one of Portmeirion’s own cafes or restaurants.

At the end of the day, head back to Betws-y-Coed for a relaxing evening in your alpine-esque village

Sunday

After breakfast it’s time to pack up the car and drive towards the rolling hills and limestone escarpments of north east Wales. The pretty riverside town of Llangollen has been drawing visitors for years. The river is a huge draw for paddle enthusiasts and sightseers alike. While the steam railway provides an insight into the travel of yesteryear and the ruins of Castell Dinas Bran loom high above, a reminder of medieval times when castles were the order of the day.

Pull on your hiking boots for an invigorating but relatively short hike up to Dinas Bran. Explore the ruins and bask in views of the rolling countryside below.

You’ll have earned a good lunch after that hike, so let us guide you to some of the foodie highlights in and around the town.

Then it will be time to wind your way back home at your leisure. A short North Wales driving holiday, filled with nature, history and quirky architecture that is unmistakably North Walian yet couldn’t be further from what you might expect.
