Below, we share our favourite places to go mountain biking in Wales:
Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park
Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park is hands down one of the best places to go mountain biking in Wales. Home to 9 mountain ranges – including the country’s tallest peak, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) – it’s a dream destination for any rider.
With breathtaking natural scenery at every turn, it’s no surprise that Eryri is packed with some of the top mountain bike trails in Wales. The terrain is incredibly diverse, from quiet pine forests and remote open ridges to thrilling single-track trails, all winding through epic mountain landscapes.
The Clwydian Range
The Clwydian Range stretches across the northeast of Wales, running from Llandegla in the south to Prestatyn in the north. As part of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it boasts jaw-dropping landscapes and epic mountain biking routes.
The mountain biking trails here offer a diverse mix of hillside tracks that are almost always deserted, along with quiet country roads. You’ll find everything from tricky, technical singletrack and tough climbs to smooth, flowing descents – perfect for riders looking for a bit of everything.
The Gower Peninsula
The epic coastline of the Gower Peninsula takes you along some of the best mountain biking trails in Wales. Located in South Wales, the peninsula is home to incredible, award-winning beaches. In fact, it was the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
There is a super network of trails here that lead you by the coastline’s golden-sand shores and electric-blue waters, providing panoramic coastal views along the way. With such fantastic seaside scenery on offer, the Gower Peninsula is easily one of the best places to go mountain biking in South Wales.
2. World-Class Trail Centres

Wales has some of the best MTB trail centres in the world. Whether you’re after gnarly black runs to test your skills or scenic green trails perfect for beginners, there’s something for every rider to enjoy in this beautiful part of the UK.
Coed Y Brenin
Coed Y Brenin was the first mountain biking centre in Wales, and indeed the whole of the UK. It is a scenic forest park in the south of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Here you’ll find a fantastic variety of purpose-built trails for all MTB abilities, from beginners to expert riders. These include singletrack, technical climbs and soaring descents.
Oneplanet Adventure

Oneplanet Adventure is another of the best mountain biking centres in Wales. It is located in Coed Llandegla Forest, which is a stunning 650-hectare forest at the north-western end of the Ruabon Moors.
The biking centre also has a great range of routes for all difficulties, from pretty forest trails by the reservoir for families and novices, to the popular B-Line Trail, a steep run taking you over a series of jumps and bermed corners winding its way through the pine forest.
3. MTB Heritage
Wales has a rich and impressive MTB heritage and has always been at the forefront of the sport’s growth and development in the UK. In fact, Coed y Brenin is considered the birthplace of trail centre riding in the whole of the UK.
It was the nation’s first purpose-built mountain biking centre and set the standard for epic trails across the region.
There is also an impressively diverse range of MTB trail centres all over Wales. This has made the country an extremely accessible mountain biking destination for riders of all skill levels.
All bikers, from beginners to seasoned pros, have always been able to come together and ‘get stoked’ for mountain biking in Wales.

The Best Time for Mountain Biking in Wales
While mountain biking in Wales is an all-year-round activity, each season promises a very different and unique riding experience. Discover what to expect during each month of the year below.
Spring (March-May)
If you’re going on a mountain biking tour in Wales in Spring, prepare to enjoy mild temperatures and some sunny days. The MTB trails also start to dry out during this time of the year after the cold winter season, providing ideal riding conditions.
If you’re looking for dry trails without the summer crowds, Spring could be the best time to go mountain biking in Wales for you.
Summer (June-August)
Summer is the most popular time to head to Wales for mountain biking. With longer days and drier trails, the conditions are perfect for long days out exploring the country’s landscapes on two wheels.
One thing to keep in mind is that some of the country’s most popular MTB trails can get quite crowded at this time of year!
Autumn (September-November)
Autumn is my personal favourite time of the year to ride in Wales. Between September and November, you can enjoy less crowded trails and the stunning autumnal colours of the landscapes.
The crisp, cool air can also be very refreshing on those challenging climbs!
Winter (December-February)
Winter is a great time for experienced riders to go mountain biking in Wales. The colder months bring mud, ice and unpredictable terrain, making it the perfect opportunity to really test your skills and endurance.
Tackle technical MTB trails in challenging winter conditions, and enjoy the quieter landscapes from December to February. With fewer crowds around, you can often explore some of the best MTB trails in the UK in peace.

Essential Tips for Mountain Biking in Wales
Follow Local Rules and Riding Etiquette
When riding outside of a trail centre, it’s important to follow the local rights of way rules. In Wales, mountain bikes are allowed on bridleways, but not footpaths, so plan your route carefully.
Each trail centre also has its own rules, opening times and guidelines. Always check the specific trail centre’s website before you visit to avoid any unwanted surprises!
Also, get familiar with the grading system of the MTB trails. They are graded similarly to ski runs, making it easy to choose the right one for your skill level. Green trails are the easiest, followed by blue, then red, with black trails being the most challenging.
What to Wear

- Helmet – essential for safety. A full-face helmet is a good choice for more technical riding
- Cycling Gloves – Improve grip and comfort, and protect your hands in case of a fall
- Moisture-Wicking Shirt – Keeps you cool and dry by wicking away sweat
- Riding Pants or Shorts – Choose durable shorts or long pants depending on the weather and terrain
- Knee and Elbow Pads – Optional but recommended for added protection on rough trails
- Jacket or Windbreaker – A lightweight, breathable jacket that helps with cooler weather or rain
- Eye Protection – Glasses or goggles protect your eyes from debris, sun, and rain
- Hydration Pack or Water Bottle – Staying hydrated is key on long rides
- Body Armor (Optional) – Extra protection for technical or downhill riding
Also, always remember to adjust your gear based on the weather, terrain and intensity of your ride!
Navigation Tips
Many trails, especially at designated centres like Oneplanet Adventure and Coed y Brenin, are well-marked. However, always carry a map or GPS device as a backup, as phone signal can be unreliable in more remote areas.
Equipment Recommendations
Be sure to pack your equipment bag carefully before you set o, so you don’t forget any important pieces of kit for a safe and comfortable trip. From multi-tools to duct tape, missing gear can make a big difference when you’re out on the trail. To help, we’ve put together The Essential MTB Kit List, making it easy to remember all the must-have gear for your next ride.
Riding Responsibility
Always follow the MTB code of conduct, respect other trail users, and leave no trace.
