Why Plan an Adventure Holiday in the UK?
We love an adventure. Exploring mountains, forests, rivers, coastlines – basically anywhere – makes us ridiculously happy. Of course, we’re not alone in this. The ever-growing tribe of adventure lovers out there was one of the reasons we started Genius Travels, to create our own community platform for people to read about our adventures and be inspired to share their own.
In the past, outdoor activities such as hiking or cycling had a bit of a PR problem, with the main focus group seeming to be retirees dressed head to toe in an unflattering shade of khaki. However, things have changed as organisations, retailers and participants alike have recognised the enormous physical and mental health benefits that time spent in the wilderness can bring.
The growing diversity of UK outdoor adventure holiday seekers is partly down to the ease with which you can now book and plan time away. With so much detail readily available on the internet and the advanced reliability of GPS route planners, it’s possible to plan an adventure with multiple travel options and exciting opportunities along the way.
Even adventurers can ask for help!
When Is The Best Time For Adventure Trips in the UK?

The best time for a UK adventure holiday is generally between May and September, when you’ll enjoy milder weather, long daylight hours, and open facilities across the country. However, conditions vary depending on the region you’re in, so stretching the season a little with an April or October adventure can offer quieter trails and still good weather, especially in southern areas!
The UK is a rewarding destination for adventure holidays all year round, with each season offering a different kind of experience. Late spring and summer bring longer daylight hours and generally milder conditions, making them ideal for multi-day journeys and high-altitude routes.
Outside the traditional peak months, adventures take on a different – and often quieter – character. Autumn offers crisp air, dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds on the trails, while winter opens up opportunities for bracing coastal walks, snow-dusted hills, and atmospheric journeys through some of the UK’s wildest places. Even early spring can be a fantastic time to explore, with blooming landscapes and a real sense of renewal.
By choosing when – and how – to travel, you can find meaningful adventures in every season, while helping to spread travel more evenly across the year and experience the UK at its most authentic.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide when to plan your next UK adventure:
| Season | Months | Average Temperature | Conditions | Best For |
| Spring | March – May | 9–15°C | Fresh greenery, wildflowers, variable weather | Quieter trails, fewer people, better accommodation prices, fewer midges in the far north |
| Summer | June – August | 10–19°C | Warmest weather, long days, occasional rain | Family holidays, hiking in lowland areas, watersports, coastal trips |
| Autumn | September – October | 7–16°C | Crisp air, autumn colours | Photographers, cooler hikes & cycling, less busy than summer |
| Winter | November – February | 0–6°C | Cold temperatures, snow, ice, short days | Experienced hikers, exploring the Scottish Highlands when the crowds have left, solitude, winter skills training, dark skies experiences |
How to Get Started: Tips for Planning the Perfect UK Adventure Holiday

They take the hassle away completely and ensure your safety during an exciting activity getaway. This means everyone, from families with young children to time-poor professionals, can find a trip that’s perfect for them. There’s a lot to think about when you’re planning an adventure holiday in the UK. If you’re not used to everything involved or you’ll struggle to find the time to plan down to the small details, it might be best to get some expert help.
Here are just a few of the things you’ll need to consider:
1) Where are you going?

First things first – consider where you’re going on your UK adventure trip. You’ve got an idea that you’d like to conquer a mountain. You’re feeling fit; you’ve googled the stunning landscapes that we have in the UK; and you’ve already got the Instagram shot planned out in your head (Top of mountain, sun rising in the background, action-man stance – you know the one). But how do you know where to find the exact landscapes you’re dreaming of? And how do you get there?
There’s enough information online or in various guidebooks. And if you’ve got the time you can plan your perfect destination, with access to all the sites and activities you want to include in your trip. We share our Genius Travels adventures online and share lots of information in our blog posts and videos if you’re looking for inspiration. Plan carefully and find a destination that’s got everything you need to make a good base for your adventure.
2) How will you navigate?

Navigation is one of the most important things to consider when adventure planning. So,if you’ve got a tricky destination or hiking route in mind, you’ll need to equip yourself with the necessary skills. This means planning out the route in advance and having the right equipment with you to navigate along the way.
We love GPS equipment and use it a lot, during the planning of our routes and on the trail itself. However, it’s important to remember you shouldn’t rely on this equipment alone. Batteries can run out, phones can get wet and stop working, and things can start going downhill very fast (hopefully not literally, unless you’ve already made it to the descent).
Take an OS map with you for the area. It could really help you out, and even if you don’t need it, it won’t take up a massive amount of space in your bag. If even the idea of map-reading brings you out in cold sweats, we’d really recommend going with someone more experienced.
Yes, we all get lost from time to time, but if you have no idea how to find the route again, you’re much better off going with a skilled guide from an independent adventure company.
3) What will you do if things go wrong?

Getting lost is a problem that is usually easily solved. However, if things got worse, would you know what to do? Some inexperienced hikers make the mistake of thinking that because they’re adventuring in the UK, they’ll be relatively safe. But it’s important not to underestimate the wilderness and the dangers that are involved.
Accidents are rare, but they can happen. It’s important to know at least some basic first aid when out on an adventure, along with knowledge of how to act if someone becomes too injured to continue. Having an experienced guide with you can make these situations a lot less scary for everyone involved.
4) What equipment do you need?
No matter where you’re heading on your UK adventure holiday, there’s some basic equipment that we’d recommend having. For something like a full-day hike, you’ll need:
- Waterproof hiking boots: A carefully chosen pair of quality walking boots will keep your feet warm and dry no matter the conditions. The good grip and ankle protection boots provide will help to keep you moving safely through the varied terrain you’ll encounter on UK adventure trips.
- A backpack with essentials: Make sure you choose a comfortable backpack and fill it with water and food supplies to see you through the day. Be sure to drink double the amount of water you would on a normal day if you’re planning a UK adventure experience that features a difficult hike.
- Comfy clothes: Layer up with clothes that can accommodate changing temperatures throughout the day. Ensure your layers are lightweight, breathable and wicking to keep you temperature-controlled and comfortable – conditions will vary between elevations in the mountains and the weather can change unexpectedly during UK adventure holidays.
- Walking Poles: A pair of lightweight walking poles can provide extra stability and support on difficult terrain. They’re not to everyone’s taste though and can feel cumbersome, so weigh up the usefulness for you on the type of trails you’ll be walking and if you can, borrow a pair to try before you buy. If you do buy and your budget allows, opt for collapsible poles for ease of carrying when not in use.
- Map, phone, money: These essential items need to be kept safe in a zipped waterproof pocket. Any UK adventure travel guide will recommend these items as part of your essential kit for safety and navigation.
- Gloves and buff/scarf: Don’t underestimate how much colder it might be as you climb up to a higher altitude. When you’re hiking up a mountain on UK outdoor adventure holidays, you might be met with gusts of wind and much colder temperatures than expected!
- First aid kit: it’s best to be prepared for every eventuality, from a simple blister to scuffed knees from a stumble, or something worse. Make sure you’re carrying the essentials to keep you and your adventure buddies moving safely.
5) What activities can you try?

Going away for an adventure also gives you the perfect opportunity to try out another activity that you might not have the chance to do at home.
There are some awesome options, including mountain biking, rock climbing and kayaking, which all offer a different way to explore the UK’s wild landscapes. For those embarking on a family adventure holiday in the UK, there are plenty of other incredible experiences to enjoy with the kids, from exploring scenic national parks to immersing in local cultures and enjoying quality time together in the great outdoors.
In order to have the instruction and equipment you need to fully participate, it’s best to go with an expert. And some adventure companies even offer multi-activity adventure holidays, so you can really make the most of your time.
