Jenny & Juan’s Scottish Railway Adventure

The Scottish railway adventure they’d always imagined

When Jenny and Juan contacted us from Detroit with a love of rail travel and fascination for Scotland, we knew exactly the kind of adventure they were seeking. Having already explored Edinburgh, they were ready to venture deeper into the Highlands and Islands, travelling independently but with every connection carefully planned. We designed a 10-day rail journey that would carry them from Edinburgh’s historic streets to the wild beauty of Skye and the legendary landscapes of the West Highland Line.

Jenny & Juan’s Brief:

  • Couple from Detroit, United States
  • Rail enthusiasts with long-standing fascination for Scotland
  • Visiting friends in Sheffield, then extending trip to Scotland
  • Previously visited Edinburgh – Jenny drawn to countryside, Juan to cities
  • Experienced hikers who consider 3-5 miles a short walk
  • Interested in the southern Highlands, Isle of Skye and Inverness
  • Happy with regular train over Glenfinnan viaduct rather than Jacobite steam train
  • Want to have a guided tour experience on Skye
  • Happy with just one night in Glasgow
  • Prefer to travel quite independently
  • Plan to finish in London, where they will make their own arrangements

Day 1: Arriving in Edinburgh

Jenny and Juan’s Scottish adventure began the moment they arrived in Edinburgh by train. We’d arranged for a private taxi to collect them, whisking them through Scotland’s capital to their boutique hotel nestled in the historic Grassmarket district. This characterful neighbourhood, with its cobbled streets and views up to the castle, provided the perfect first impression of Edinburgh’s unique charm and gave them the evening to settle in and explore the local pubs and restaurants we’d recommended.

Day 2: The Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace

We’d structured their first full day in Edinburgh with complete freedom, knowing they’d want to rediscover the city at their own pace. The walk along the Royal Mile took them through centuries of Scottish history, from Edinburgh Castle perched dramatically on its volcanic rock to the elegant Holyrood Palace at the foot of Arthur’s Seat. We’d arranged admission tickets to both landmarks, understanding that these iconic sites would give them the perfect introduction to Scotland’s royal heritage and turbulent past.

Day 3: Exploring More of Edinburgh

The second day in Edinburgh allowed Jenny and Juan to delve deeper into the city’s character. We’d arranged for them to experience a private-guided walking tour, knowing that a local expert would reveal the hidden gems and fascinating stories that make Edinburgh so captivating. The afternoon was theirs to explore the independent shops along Victoria Street, perhaps enjoy afternoon tea, or simply absorb the atmosphere of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage city.

Day 4: The West Highland Line to Fort William

The real adventure began as Jenny and Juan boarded the train from Edinburgh, bound for Fort William via Glasgow. The West Highland Line is widely considered one of the world’s most scenic railway routes, the transition from Lowland Scotland through increasingly dramatic Highland landscapes builds anticipation, before arriving into Fort William. They loved how friendly the Scots were, especially the people they met on the train who shared great stories. With the evening free to explore this mountainous gateway town, Jenny & Juan could prepare for the island adventures ahead.

Day 5: Journey to the Isle of Skye

Morning brought the journey we knew would be a highlight: the train ride over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct to Mallaig. After enjoying views of the iconic 21-arched bridge and the monument commemorating Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite rising, they arrived in to the small harbour town of Mallaig. The ferry crossing from Mallaig to Armadale then transported them from mainland to island life, before our trusted local taxi partner collected them for the scenic drive to Portree, Skye’s charming harbourside main town where brightly painted houses and excellent seafood restaurants awaited.

Day 6: Discovering Skye with a Local Guide

We’d offered Jenny and Juan a choice for exploring Skye and they’d opted to enjoy the day with our knowledgeable local guide for a private driver-guided tour, as an alternative to an open group minibus tour. This decision proved perfect – our local guide Mark, who lives on a traditional croft with his family, took them beyond the typical tourist sites to discover Skye’s quieter corners, sharing stories and landscapes that only someone who truly knows the island could reveal. There was no queuing at the island’s hotspots for them, just an intimate and truly authentic glimpse into island life, with a good cuppa and homemade cake back at Mark’s croft.

Day 7: The Kyle Line to Inverness

The journey from Skye back to the mainland marked another chapter in their Scottish story. We’d arranged a private taxi from Portree to Kyle of Lochalsh, allowing them to savour their final island views before boarding the train along the spectacular Kyle Line. This lesser-known route is no less stunning, and delivered them eastward through some of Scotland’s most remote and beautiful landscapes. Arriving into Inverness, the riverside capital of the Highlands welcomed them with its blend of history and contemporary Scottish life.

Day 8: Loch Ness and the Cairngorms

We’d planned this day in Inverness with flexibility, knowing Jenny and Juan would appreciate both structured experiences and free time. The morning coach and boat cruise we’d arranged took them out onto the legendary Loch Ness, including a visit to the atmospheric ruins of Urquhart Castle, providing both history and those essential monster-spotting opportunities. The afternoon train journey to Pitlochry carried them through the Cairngorms, the UK’s largest national park, delivering stunning mountain views as they travelled south to this charming Highland Perthshire village. Jenny and Juan both wanted to emphasize that all the Scottish people they met were so friendly and that hearing their stories on the train made the trip feel even more authentic

Day 9: Exploring Loch Faskally and Blair Castle

Jenny and Juan’s final full day in Scotland gave them the freedom to truly unwind in the picturesque Highland village of Pitlochry. The morning offered the perfect opportunity for a relaxed walk along the shores of Loch Faskally, whilst the afternoon provided the option to visit nearby Blair Castle at Blair Atholl. Home to the Atholl family for over seven centuries, the castle’s fine interiors and Scots Baronial architecture tell stories of politicians, soldiers and entrepreneurs through both turbulent and peaceful Highland history. When Jenny and Juan asked if they could spend an extra night in Pitlochry to allow a full day to explore and avoid a late arrival into London, we arranged a second evening at their welcoming family-run guesthouse, with local restaurants just a short stroll away.

Day 10: Returning to London

After enjoying a final delicious breakfast, Jenny and Juan’s carefully crafted Scottish rail adventure concluded with a morning departure from Pitlochry. The train south to London carried them through the heart of Scotland one final time, providing a few last views of the Highland landscapes they’d explored over the previous days. Arriving into London in the afternoon, their ten-day journey through Scotland’s islands, mountains and historic cities drew to a close.
