The Epic Welsh Cycling Journey They Had In Mind
When Eric and Sarah sought a challenging, authentic cycling journey, we crafted a seamless 9-day self-guided tour connecting the vibrant capital with the dramatic Pembrokeshire coast. We managed all the logistics, from bike delivery to daily luggage transfers, allowing this experienced couple to focus purely on the ride, balancing physical effort with stunning scenery to deliver their perfect South Wales Coastal Cycling adventure.

- Comfortable with daily distances of 60-70km, adjusted downwards for days with significant elevation

- Requested flexibility in the route with options for distance extensions
- Prioritised high-quality accommodation
“My wife and I recently completed a mostly tailor-made self guided bicycle trip in Southwest Wales. The planning and communication was superb. This is definitely an experienced company that makes you feel confident you’re being taken care of. The routes that they planned for us were exactly what we wanted: areas with little traffic which are quite desolate, but mixed with towns and villages full of culture and great food. The accommodations were also exactly what we wanted, with several upgrades which came as a nice surprise. We are avid cyclists, and chose the tailor-made option because we wanted something a little more challenging than what was on their menu of options. They absolutely delivered.”
Eric & Sarah
Day 1: Arriving in the Welsh Capital
Eric and Sarah’s South Wales adventure began with their arrival into Cardiff, where we arranged accommodation at a comfortable, centrally-located city hotel. Shortly after settling in, our trusted bike hire partner met them right at the hotel to deliver and fit their bikes, giving them a full run-through of the equipment. This initial evening provided a gentle introduction to the city’s energy, allowing them to fuel up with a good dinner before their challenging week of cycling began.
Day 2: The Epic Ride to Swansea
The first day of cycling took the couple on a spectacular and demanding journey from Cardiff to Swansea, covering over 80km with significant elevation. We planned a route that quickly left the city behind, guiding them northwards into the iconic South Wales Valleys. The ride challenged them with the climb up the Bwlch mountain road, rewarding their efforts with sweeping views over the Rhondda Valley before a thrilling descent through the Afan Valley. They finished the day by following the cycle path into Swansea, where we had transferred their luggage to their hotel, ready for a well-deserved evening of rest.
Day 3: Coastal Cycling on the Gower Peninsula
Eric and Sarah set off for the Gower Peninsula, embarking on a shorter but equally rewarding ride toward the coastal village of Llangennith. This leg brought them into the heart of the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route took them across the peninsula’s spine, climbing Cefn Bryn to enjoy panoramic views of the coast on both sides. We knew this change in pace and location would provide a wonderful, authentic taste of rural coastal life as they arrived at their traditional inn for the night.
Day 4: River Views & Coastal Lanes
Their journey continued southwest, with a 55km ride that took them along the north Gower coast and across the Loughor estuary. They cycled past the salt marshes of Llanrhidian and joined the Millennium Coastal Path, enjoying flat, traffic-free miles with views across to the Gower. We suggested a stop to admire the imposing ruins of Kidwelly Castle before they pedalled through quiet country lanes to the river village of Ferryside. We ensured their luggage was transferred ahead to their hotel overlooking the river, allowing them to simply focus on the joy of the ride.

Day 5: Conquering the Highest Climb to Saundersfoot
This was one of the most physically demanding days, with Eric and Sarah tackling a challenging 69km cycle with significant climbing en route to Saundersfoot. It wasn’t all hard pedaling though as the route balanced effort with culture, guiding them through the historic town of Laugharne, famous as the home of poet Dylan Thomas. After a stop to see his boathouse, they faced a steep climb out of the village before enjoying a stunning coastal run into Amroth and finally Saundersfoot. The chance to relax at their elegant spa hotel was a welcome end to a tough day.
Day 6: History & Heritage in Pembroke
A 58km ride carried them from the seaside charm of Saundersfoot to the historic town of Pembroke. This day was packed with iconic sights, starting with the colourful harbour of Tenby before heading past Manorbier Castle and the lily ponds at Stackpole. With a small detour they could also pause to visit the iconic village of Freshwater East, where the options for refreshments meant a Welsh cake or locally caught fish & chips wouldn’t be hard to find! Finishing their ride in Pembroke with its medieval history, Pembroke Castle and charming shops, this route provided the opportunity to witness the area’s rich history and architectural heritage, perfectly complementing their cycling adventure.

Day 7: Pembroke to St Davids
Eric and Sarah enjoyed breakfast before heading out on a 55km journey to St Davids. They cycled over farmland and through picturesque villages until reaching Haverfordwest. From here, the route returned to the coast, leading them alongside almost two miles of beautiful golden beach at Newgale Sands. With its Blue Flag status, the clear blue water offered the perfect stop for a mid-ride ocean dip. They finished the ride in St Davids, the most westerly point of Wales and the UK’s smallest city. To celebrate, we suggested that they enjoy a delicious meal and the local independent pizzeria before spending the evening in their cosy hotel.
Day 8: St Davids to Fishguard
After breakfast, the couple left their luggage at reception for transfer and set out on their last day of cycling. The 32km route, an extension to our usual South Wales Coastal Cycling trip, offered a scenic ride through charming countryside. Leaving St Davids, the journey began with a gradual ascent through the quiet hamlet of Rhodiad-y-Brenin, soon giving way to open fields. The route wound down to the sheltered inlet of Abercastle before peaceful country lanes and rolling farmland guided the way. A smooth descent brought them into Fishguard to complete their ride, where they checked into their guest house.

Day 9: Returning to Cardiff
The adventure drew to a close after a final breakfast. Eric and Sarah packed their bags and headed out for a last explore of Fishguard while their bikes were collected from the accommodation. They then headed to the station for the train journey back to Cardiff, bringing their Welsh cycling adventure to a close.
Plan your personal adventure
This bespoke 9-day cycling journey was based upon our 8-day South Wales Coastal Cycling but further extended to begin from Cardiff and end in Fishguard, as per Eric and Sarah’s wishes for a more challenging adventure on two wheels. From managing challenging daily logistics like cycling routes, luggage transfers and bike collection to curating accommodations that perfectly matched Eric and Sarah’s taste, every detail was carefully planned. We delivered an unforgettable adventure that took them from the heart of Cardiff to the breath-taking Pembrokeshire coast.
